Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for filling)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh herbs (thyme, parsley, or rosemary)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. 1. Activate yeast: Combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast in a bowl; let sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. 2. Make dough: Add eggs, softened butter, flour, and salt to the yeast mixture; knead until smooth (8-10 minutes). Let rise in a warm place for an hour.
  3. 3. Prepare filling: Melt butter in a pan over low heat; add minced garlic and cook until fragrant (about 2 minutes). Stir in chopped herbs; set aside.
  4. 4. Shape bread: Roll out dough into a rectangle; brush with garlic herb mixture and sprinkle mozzarella evenly.
  5. 5. Create swirls: Roll tightly into a log; slice lengthwise and twist both halves together with cut sides up.
  6. 6. Second rise: Place twisted dough in a greased pan; cover and let rise for another 30–40 minutes.
  7. 7. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush loaf with egg wash (beaten egg mixed with water); bake for about 35–40 minutes until golden brown.
  8. 8. Cool: Let cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing.
